Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
